Creating the perfect sweet table

Sweet tables are all the rage! Who remembers going to the corner shop for their little bag of sweets on a Saturday morning or heading to the cinema for a pic ‘n’ mix? Sweets always seem like a special treat so what better place than a wedding to over indulge and get your sweet treat high!

The past 7 years weddings have had a very strong Vintage theme and the sweet table was a huge hit. With stripey paper bags, old fashioned bon bon jars and shiny silver tongs and scoops it was the perfect addition, adding a little bit of fun and colour to any reception.

It also matched perfectly with other themes such as rainbow colours and carnival, where you really can go wild with your sweets and colour scheme.

Things have transformed from a simple candy cart to a full-blown cake and dessert table. These have been very common in America for a number of years but have only recently been taken on over here. Although, we still love our 3-course traditional wedding breakfast we can now step sideways from this and have now taken on new traditions.

It’s not just a buffet! Colours, themes and hobbies, can be shown throughout our wedding and the sweet buffet is nothing short of a work of art! So many cake makers now do cake pops, biscuits, macaroons and mini cakes to blend into your wedding or indeed any event!

With that in mind the sweet buffet can be something that can go out of hand quite quickly. As your spare room becomes filled with mountains of boxes of sweets, will thy make it to the wedding? Who knows?!

Here are our top 5 tips on:

How to create the best Candy Bar and Sweet Buffet!

  • Think colours. If you have a colour scheme then go for sweets/chocs that match it. If pink is your chosen colour then go for a full range pale pink all the way to magenta with some whites thrown in for good luck! Use cake pops with coloured icing/design, sweets that are wrapped in coloured foil, sweets or jelly sweets that match it.
  • Use furniture. You don’t have to stick with a simple clothed trestle table. If your venue has a bureau or item of furniture that you can use the go for it!
  • Use items that match your theme. If you have gone rustic then pop your jars on chunks of wood, stack crates to give you some extra height and fill them with your jars. Going elegant in a hotel then use old-fashioned bon bon jars, vases and votives of a range of heights and sizes to add depth and richness. Using crates/jars/wood/vintage suitcases anything that works with your chosen theme bringing everything together and more cohesive.
  • Use signage. Chalk signs, cardboard clips and bunting can all add to the indulgent feel of a sweet/dessert table. If your hobby is knitting/crochet/painting/writing/drawing then use this in artwork to adorn your buffet table.
  • If in doubt pick your favourites! If you have a family joke or a sweet or dessert that you and your partner adore then go for it. If you are both absolute chocoholics then fill your sweet buffet with different chocolates. It’s your wedding so make the buffet bar your own!

Added bonus tip!

Get your guests to bring a sweet treat and have a competition! I remember co-ordinating a marquee/carnival style wedding a number of years ago and we had got all the guests to bring a dessert/cake. Granny’s, friends, and relatives had made their own favourite desserts and the guests all got to pick the cake with the best icing, looked the nicest, tasted the sweetest etc. They filled cake stands and it brought a lovely fete feel to the big day.
