Charities in Cumbria

Cumbria has a number of fabulous charities and organisations that help our local communities.

You don’t have to donate to make a difference as there are plenty of ways to get involved, whether as a volunteer or a member. We’ve highlighted just a few to inspire you to be part of something bigger. It’s not always about giving money; it’s about offering your time, meeting new people, building friendships, and supporting others on their journey.

It is wonderful that many charities also offer Grant Funding for community projects so it is also worthwhile talking to them how they can help your project.

Lake District Foundation

The Lake District Foundation was established as a charity in August 2017. Prior to this, under the name Nurture Lakeland, the organisation had been working for 23 years to raise funds from visitors and the tourism industry. We also delivered sustainable tourism programmes and messages across Cumbria, gaining national recognition. The Lake District Foundation will build on this work and grow in reach, impact and influence. Our vision is that the Lake District will be an inspirational example of sustainable development in action, and a place where a prosperous economy, world-class visitor experiences and vibrant communities come together to sustain its spectacular landscape, wildlife and cultural heritage.

The Lake District Foundation will achieve this vision by raising funds and distributing them to effective projects that share our goals.

Calvert Trust

Calvert Trust

The Lake District Calvert Trust welcomes day visitors to swim in the pool or ride at the stables, as well as residential guests who stay with us on adventure breaks in the Lakes. As a truly unique centre, our facilities are specialised to cater for varying complex needs, ensuring that all abilities can enjoy their time with us. And while our dedicated activity centre is designed for people with disabilities, you don’t have to have a disability to visit us.

Families and groups where one or more person has a disability are invited to Calvert Lakes alongside their friends, family members, peers and carers. We don’t leave anyone behind!

Opening up the great outdoors in a safe and supportive environment is our chief aim. We enable those with disabilities to experience new sensations, try exciting activities and build confidence with new experiences. We’ll challenge you to think differently, to focus on ability rather than inability, and alter your perception of what is possible.

Our guests tell us that visiting here precipitates tangible change in people’s lives that continues long after their stay. We call this the Calvert Effect and it’s why we come to work every day.
