How to write the perfect best man’s speech!
You’ve had the call. Your best friend/brother has asked you to be his best man. It’s time to be hilarious yet you hate public speaking and really you have no idea where to start, let alone what to say. Well, fear not, here are the details of how to write the perfect best man’s speech.
You need to do the following things!
- Go through old photos, memoires, experiences that the two of you had together. Get in touch with the grooms’ friends for funny stories/anecdotes. Write them all down. Are there any common themes? You don’t have to use the full anecdote but could simply add a couple of quotes from guests/relatives/co-workers and then back them up with your own stories. Reading things from guests who couldn’t make the wedding is a must so ask the couple if there is anyone that can’t make it, generally a relative, they don’t need to hear from hundreds of co-workers!
- Don’t write pages and pages, people at the wedding have come to eat, drink and celebrate and although the speeches are a lovely addition it’s better to keep it simple, short and sweet. 10-15 minutes is absolutely plenty, 5 minutes is generally too short.
- Do not go on the internet and use the same hundred ‘funny’ quotes that you have heard at every other wedding. It means nothing to the people at the wedding. YES, using a funny quote as an ice-breaker is a little different but it’s much better to keep things personal.
- Structure your speech and simply fill it in.
