Autumn is here and with that comes a new range of wedding colours, themes and schemes. I always feel that a warmth is captured in the autumn. Weddings can take on a different depth with reds, oranges, browns and soups, stews, apple pie. Autumnal events always feel a bit homely to me; like a big bowl of chilli, cosying up under blankets in front of the fire…but not yet on the mulled wine?!
Having an autumn or indeed winter wedding are now really popular seasons – not just because having a wedding on a Thursday in October is slightly cheaper! You can still create something that is just as wonderful as it would have been in July in the height of wedding season.
As the leaves turn from green to brown a whole host of colour schemes can be found. Many weddings bring the outside in and can mirror the changes in seasons. October and November filled with natural orange, brown and red can sound daunting to use such bold colours but when designed correctly can create a very romantic and warm environment no matter if your numbers are 2 or 200.
It’s easy to design a wedding around a colour, theme or season and you can do this through everything from decor to food.
Décor and design
Fill your wedding tables with vases of autumnal colours but you can tone the vibrancy down slightly with some lighter evergreens or natural barley. Why not use dried leaves or pine cones interspersed with a range of candles? Pumpkins and gourds are a creative way to fill a space – they come in every shape, size and colour – deep greens, orange and cream.
Food
No matter what month you get married in food is always a big factor. You get this wrong and your guests will remember.
Luckily in Cumbria with have some fantastic caterers and venue who are keen on local produce and sustainability within the county. Go for something you would both eat! I know that sounds a little selfish but the day is about you after all! Remember your catering team will have done this 100’s of times before so ask for their advice.
Autumnal food can be a little heavy and as those guests will be dancing the night away later you don’t want them overfull and sluggish! So, if you are thinking of a hearty stew, Cumberland sausage and Mash or Roast Beef with all the trimmings pick your starter and dessert around this. Or just go for 2 courses – saving a little money and not harming your guest’s abilities to throw some moves on the dancefloor!
Venue
When picking your autumn venue please remember that it will be cold! You don’t want your guests walking too far out of a marquee/teepee to the toilets. But every good outdoor venue and marquee company will have the ability to bring heaters in.
What is great with an outdoor wedding is you can add some great design features from festoon lighting to blankets for your guests. Plus, most teepee’s have the additional talking point of a fire pit! Always a hit with guests when they can roast some marshmallows!
